Mokume gane is a type of Japanese jewellery technique of layering various metals to produce a marble-like effect. Mokume gane is translated as “wood grain effect”. While not actually made with wood, it gave the same layering found in wood.

It was first introduced during the 17th century by Denbei Shoami. The technique involves layering metals and fusing them together to create a block. Precious metals were scarce in Japan, so Mokume gane allowed a new way of fusing other metal alloys together for jewellery.
