Why are there so many jewellers in Brighton?

The Lanes at night

Why are there so many jewellers in Brighton?

Brighton is a city on the south coast of England, famed for its quirky and independent shops. The Lanes are a maze of narrow streets in the heart of Brighton. What was once the abodes of the local fisherman are now home to some of the best independent stores in the country. If you’re looking for a unique gift, a diamond engagement ring or wedding ring, then The Lanes should be your first stop! But why are there so many jewellery shops in Brighton?

Where are The Lanes antique shops?

Well, it has been a gradual transition from The Lanes being packed with antique stores up to the 1980’s, to now being a hub of independent jewellery shops. As elaborate Victorian ornaments & traditional ‘brown furniture’ fell out of favour the general antique stores gradually shut up shop. The jewellery stores among them however, survived within The Lanes. As more jewellery shops opened, replacing the antique stores the area soon became known as a jewellery mecca.

But how do all the Brighton jewellers survive in such a competitive area? I hear you ask. Well, the great thing about the many independent jewellery stores in The Lanes is the diverse range of jewellery you can see of offer. If you want a truly unique bespoke ring designed & made for you, you can visit RING jewellers. It it’s a designer watch that you are in the market for then you have Ocean Jewellers. There are also lots of 2nd hand jewellery stores in The Lanes too.

How many jewellery shops are there in The Lanes, Brighton?

So how many jewellery shops are there in The Lanes? Well sometimes the odd jewellery shop closes, & a new one opens, but a good rule of thumbs that there are around 40 jewellery stores practically side by side in The Lanes. Most of which are located in one street! (Meeting House Lane).

It can be daunting choosing a jewellers from all of these shops but a little online research goes a long way. Look for a well established store. Also check out the shops Google reviews. Lastly, if a jeweller seems too pushy & offers you a huge discount maybe take a breath & consider if the pre-discounted price was a genuine one!

Brighton’ Lanes make a refreshing change to most towns & cities that are full of the same few high street chain stores. In most towns if you are looking for jewellery you will probably find a branch of H.Samuel or Ernest Jones & not a lot else. Brighton’s Lanes are definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the area. Brighton is easily accessible by train from London Victoria which takes just over an hour. Brighton also has a great selection of hotels, B&Bs and Airbnb’s to suit a wide range of budgets.

So, if you’re ever in Brighton, be sure to check out The Lanes and all of the amazing independent shops, bars & restaurants it has to offer! You won’t be disappointed.
