What is an eternity ring?

The Meaning Behind Eternity Rings

Eternity rings, sometimes known as infinity rings, are a token of undying love and commitment between partners. The circular design of the ring represents eternal love, with no beginning and no end. Unlike engagement rings, which typically feature a prominent centre stone, eternity rings are adorned with a continuous line of precious gemstones, usually diamonds, encircling the band. This unbroken circle symbolises an unending commitment, making it a powerful and meaningful expression of love.

When is an Eternity Ring Presented?

Eternity rings are traditionally presented during significant milestones in a relationship, making them a heartfelt gesture to commemorate special moments. While there is no strict rule, these rings are commonly given on a couple’s forst anniversary or the birth of a child.

The gift of an eternity ring is a deeply personal and romantic act, often accompanied by a heartfelt expression of love and commitment. Some partners choose to surprise their loved ones, while others may discuss and select the ring together, adding a touch of shared sentiment to the piece. Regardless of the occasion or the method of presentation, the exchange of an eternity ring signifies a renewed pledge of love and devotion.

Styles of Eternity Rings

Eternity rings come in various styles, allowing couples to choose a design that resonates with their personal taste and preferences. The most common feature of these rings is the continuous band of gemstones, but the arrangement, type of gemstones, and metal choices can vary. As eternity rings are usually a simple line of stones it is the Diamond setting styles that can make them vary in appearance. Here are some popular styles of eternity rings:

Full Eternity Rings

In a full eternity ring, the precious gemstones encircle the entire circumference of the band. This style is a stunning representation of unending love, as the diamonds or other gemstones are visible from every angle.

Half Eternity Rings

As the name suggests, half eternity rings feature gemstones covering only the front half of the band. This style is a more economical choice & can reduce wear on the bottom of the ring while still maintaining a beautiful and symbolic design.

Channel Set Eternity Rings

Channel set eternity rings have gemstones placed within a groove or ‘channel’, creating a sleek and modern appearance. This setting protects the stones and offers a smooth, uninterrupted surface.

Pave Milgrain Set Eternity Rings

Pave Milgrain set rings have small gemstones closely set together, creating a sparkling surface that resembles a pavement of diamonds. This style adds a touch of glamour and brilliance to the ring. The Milgrain refers to a fine beaded edging detail that also makes the metal catch the light as well as the Diamonds.

Claw Set Eternity Rings

Claw set eternity rings are set in a similar way to the large stone in a Diamond solitaire. There are small wire claws that set each Diamond. What sets this design apart is that there is no line of metal above & below the stones as there is on a channel or páve set ring. This keeps the Diamonds as the stars of the show & makes for a very fiery design.

Coloured Gemstone Eternity Rings

While diamonds are the most popular choice, some couples opt for coloured gemstones to add a personal touch to their eternity ring. Sapphires, Rubies, or other coloured stones can be incorporated to represent birthstones, anniversaries, or personal preferences.

The confusing thing is that nowadays people wear eternity rings as wedding rings too! In other words, there is no defining feature that sets apart a Diamond set wedding ring & an eternity ring! The result of this is often an engagement that is sandwiched between two Diamond bands which gives a beautiful symmetry.
