Which engagement ring should I buy?
Setting out to buy an engagement ring can be a daunting process. Many customers ask themselves questions like “Which engagement ring should I buy?” or “Which engagement ring shape is best?”. The most important thing to remember though, is that the choice is a very personal one & that choice is yours. This article helps to give a little direction when you are starting out on the journey of finding your perfect engagement ring but do keep in mind you are wearing the ring & you must be happy with it.
Which engagement ring shape is the most popular?
Round, Brilliant cut Diamond engagement rings are always the most popular shape or ‘cut’ of Diamond. They are classic & never go out of fashion.
Which size of Diamond should I choose?
This is often determined by budget. Obviously don’t look to get a huge Diamond if you &/or your partner cannot afford to buy one. Nowadays though there is the choice of natural & lab grown Diamonds. If you like a larger Diamond & your budget doesn’t allow for a natural stone a lab grown Diamond can be a great alternative. One overlooked point is the scale of a Diamond in relation to your finger size. For example a 1.00ct Diamond looks very large on a size ‘i’ finger but the same size & weight of stone will appear smaller on a size ‘T’. Do consider this because the carat weight you have in mind may not suit your hand.
Which cut or shape of Diamond should I choose?
This is mainly a matter of personal taste but if you have long elegant fingers you may want to consider a longer cut that ends in a point like a marquise or pear cut. Wider fingers suit a wider stone so you may want to consider a princess cut or one of the longer cuts set horizontally instead of the more common vertical orientation. You could even consider a Diamond engagement ring with shoulder stones or a 3 stone trilogy ring. Round & oval cut Diamonds suit most hand shapes.
Should an engagement ring be a surprise?
Going back a few years the engagement was more often that not a total surprise to the recipient. Nowadays though it is far more common for your partner to have much more input. Some couples go engagement ring shopping together. Others choose to give their partner a shortlist of preferred designs.
Gold or Platinum?
This really is a matter of personal taste. One tip we would offer though is do try jewellery lots of rings on & don’t just look at images online. We mention this because many customers have a definite metal in mind but when they try on another colour, they find it suits their skin tone really well & they prefer it.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
There is a so-called tradition of spending a percentage of your annual salary. This is sometimes said to be one month & other times 3 months. We will let you into a little secret though….. this ‘tradition’ was invented by a Diamond mining company called De Beers to try & sell more Diamonds. Bearing this in mind just spend what you are comfortable with.
