Crossover rings are when each side of the shoulders intersect with one another. It can be a wedding band or an engagement ring style. Bypass ring shanks happen when the ends of the ring cross over each other without intersecting. 

This bypass engagement ring holds a horizontally-set emerald cut diamond between its grasp. The distinct ring setting allows light to pass through the diamond easier than a traditional engagement ring setting, casting flashes of light.
