Gemologist in Brighton

Despite there being around 40 jewellery shops in The Lanes there are remarkably few qualified gemologists in Brighton but is this important when looking for a trusted jeweller? Well yes, it can actually make a big difference to the quality of customer service & information you receive. At RING jewellers we have highly qualified gemologists in Brighton working right here at the shop on a regular basis. Between them they have the following gemology & other jewellery qualifications:

  • DGA
  • Italian Gemological  Institute – Graduate Gemologist
  • GIA AJP
  • GEM-A Member
  • JVA – Jewellery Valuers Association Founder Member
  • Chamber of Commerce of Brescia (Italy) – Valuer

Here are some reasons why working with qualified gemologists can make a big difference to the service you receive…..

You may have a family heirloom that you want to learn more about. A qualified gemologist can perform a range of tests to tell you the type & quality of gemstones in the jewellery. They may also be able to tell you if the gemstones are natural, synthetic or treated. When customers think of lab grown gemstones they think of this as a new concept. Did you know though that synthetic Sapphires for example have been produced since 1873 so the assumption of “It’s old so it must be real” is not always the case! Also, rings & other jewellery often gets repaired over the years & old gemstones get swapped out for new ones.

As well as helping to educate you about your own jewellery it is crucial that the pieces in a jewellery shop window have been professionally assessed. Many shops buy in 2nd hand jewellery without professionally testing the gemstones & the descriptions in the window are nothing more than an educated guess (& sometimes not even that educated!). This might sound shocking as you would expect the jewellers to be experts in their field. We know from experience though that when customers come to RING jewellers to ask about their jewellery it is often not what they have been told it is. We have seen so called Sapphires that are actually Tanzanites, Alexandrites that are actually green Sapphires, fracture filled Rubies & many, many, synthetic stones that were sold as natural!

As well as having our own onsite gemologists in Brighton we also sell certificated Diamonds that have been independently graded by gemologists. All our Diamonds over 0.25ct come with an independent certificate. Our natural Diamonds are GIA certificated while our lab grown Diamonds are IGI certified.

So if you would like to get an old piece of jewellery remodelled, or would just like to know more about it, feel free to get in touch. Our highly qualified team of designers, goldmsiths & gemologists in Brighton will look forward to meeting you.
