What to do with broken jewellery?
Many people have old broken jewellery that has been stuck in a drawer for years & don’t know what to do with it. Obviously, some jewellery can be easily repaired but other times there are indications that there is a bigger problem like:
- Stones repeatedly fall out
- A ring keeps bending out of shape
- A chain keeps breaking
- A ring keeps snapping at the back
Assuming the jewellery isn’t being worn at unsuitable times (like heavy gym workouts, gardening etc.) these issues are usually because a piece of jewellery has reached the end of its life due to the wear it has suffered. Chain links, Diamond settings & ring shanks can wear thin especially if they are either very old or were made a little flimsy to start with.
So, what can you do with this old jewellery? Well, one thing that springs to mind is to sell it to a 2nd hand jewellery store. This is a terrible idea! When they buy in jewellery from members of the public 2nd hand jewellery stores are very harsh. They pay below scrap metal values whether the item is in perfect condition or is broken. A far better option is jewellery remodelling.
Resetting your Diamonds & gemstones
Obviously, you have to pay to have a piece remodelled but most of the time the insurance value of the new piece is far higher than the price you paid. This is because you have supplied at least some of the materials like Gold, Diamonds, Coloured stones etc. The only jewellery that is not economical to remodel is Silver because the labour outweighs the value of the finished piece. Some people still choose to remodel Silver for sentimental reasons though.
