Unfortunately there is no standard answer to this as it will vary from shop to shop. Here are a few tips that should help though…

  • In the UK if you buy an engagement ring online & it is not bespoke you have the right to return it thanks to distant selling regulations.
  • If you buy an engagement ring in store different jewellers’ return & exchange policies vary so check with the shop assistant & get their answer in writing if you make a purchase.
  • What if a ring is bespoke? At RING jewellers we are proud to offer a satisfaction guarantee. This means that if a customer or their partner is not 100% happy with a ring we have made, we will alter or exchange it up to the full value paid. Do note that this is very rare though! In the vast majority of jewellery stores if an item has been commissioned (is bespoke) you have no rights at all to return or exchange it.
  • Do not rely entirely on a jewellers warranty if they offer one. If a ring is damaged it is often very hard to establish whether it is through everyday wear & tear or an accident. This often causes a debate with the warranty not being honoured. Instead make sure your engagement ring is covered by your household insurance. Ask your insurer your individual item allowance & if the engagement ring is over this value then ask to list it separately. TOP TIP – make sure you are covered outside of your home too as some insurers use this small print to wriggle out of a claim.
