What is the difference between an engagement ring & a wedding ring?
- An engagement ring is presented when somebody wants to propose (ask their partner to marry them).
- Wedding rings are exchanged on a couple’s wedding day.
The most popular engagement ring design for a lady is a solitaire (a single Diamond). Sometimes solitaire engagement rings have small Diamonds set into the shank (band).
Other favoured styles are Three stone or ‘Trilogy’ engagement rings. Trilogy rings have a one Diamond to symbolise the past, one for the present & one for the future. ‘Halo’ rings are also popular. Halo engagement rings have one large stone in the centre with a ring of small Diamonds around it hence the ‘Halo’.
Although it is less common for a man to wear an engagement ring many do. Men’s engagement rings tend to look more like wedding rings. Sometimes when the man gets married he may add a detail to his engagement ring like an engraving or gemstone. Other times he may choose to stack it with a wedding ring as ladies usually do.
Wedding ring designs can vary massively. Many people choose plain, simple wedding rings. Others choose textured finishes, gemstones, grooves, or other details. Many people believe that wedding rings should match but it is actually quite rare that they do. Often there is a detail linking the designs, but they are not often identical.
