Wedding ring shapes & profiles

Wedding rings come in a range of profiles. The image above shows the most popular shapes of wedding ring.

Which shape of wedding ring is the most comfortable?

Many customers ask this question wondering if a D-shape ring will sit too proudly, or if a flat band will feel sharp? Most people are surprised to discover that if a ring is well made & sized perfectly then you will not even feel it on the had after just a few days. This means the best advice is to choose a ring you like the look of & let the jeweller deal with making it comfortable. At RING jewellers we always offer the first resizing free of charge in case a wedding ring needs tweaking.

D-shape vs Court shape wedding rings

The confusing thing is that many jewellers mistakenly call ‘D-court shape’ wedding rings ‘Court shape’. This is technically incorrect because the court shape actually refers to the curved inside of a ring. Putting this to one side though a D-shape wedding ring is flat inside with a domed outside. The cross section looks like an uppercase letter ‘D’. A court shape wedding ring on the other hand is curved on the inside & domed on the outside.

D-court & Flat court shaped wedding rings

As mentioned above ‘Court shape’ refers to curving the inside of a wedding ring. This means you can court the inside of almost any ring regardless of its outer profile. The result might be a D-court, Flat court or even a more unusual Bevelled court.

Are court shaped rings more comfortable?

In America Court shaped wedding rings are actually known as ‘Comfort fit’. This would lead you to expect that they are. What most jewellers will not tell you though is the difference in feel between say a D-shape & a D-court shape is temporary. Despite a court shape feeling more comfortable at first after a few days you do not feel your wedding ring on the hand as mentioned above. If customers were more aware of the feel particular profiles jewellers would simply not sell them.
