The Difference Between Light, Medium & Heavyweight Wedding Rings
Many people ask “What is the difference between light, medium & heavyweight wedding rings?”
Well the answer may shock you…..these terms mean absolutely nothing at all!
The problem is that there is no industry standard or governing body when it comes to wedding ring weights. This means an unscrupulous jeweller can easily sell you a flimsy lightweight wedding ring as a heavyweight wedding ring.
The problem for the consumer when they are shopping around to compare prices is that two wedding rings might be made from the same precious metal, be in the same width & finger size & yet vary massively in weight & therefore price. This video explains this concept in more detail: Why do wedding ring prices vary so much?
Some customers understandably try to buy on price alone but remember cheaper usually equals lighter & more flimsy. The high street jewellery chains are masters at making jewellery look affordable but it is actually only low-cost becuase of the lack of precious metal weight &/or gemstone quality.
If you want your wedding ring to last you obviously need to set a budget but don’t buy on price alone. It is far better to buy a well-made wedding ring in a cheaper metal than a flimsy one in a more valuable metal.
Consider this….. Platinum is more durable than Gold but a well-made Gold ring will far outlive a thin, lightweight Platinum one.
“So how do you buy a wedding ring without getting ripped off?”
Well, as we have established the terminology of light , medium & heavyweight wedding rings mean nothing at all. Bearing this in mind it is best to discuss measurements with your jeweller. If you look for a wedding ring that is between 1.5mm & 2mm then you will not go far wrong. This tolerance of depth is the perfect balance of comfort & strength. Much deeper & the wedding ring could be uncomfortable. Much shallower & the ring will soon bend out of shape & snap through ‘metal fatigue’.
