Textured engagement rings
Some customers like the idea of a more unique engagement ring. One way to create a more unusual look is using a textured finish. One term used in textured engagement rings is ‘Wabi-Sabi’. This is a Japanese aesthetic and philosophical concept that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness.
Types of texture:
- Organic, molten, melted
- Engraved, laser engraved
- Bark, wood effect
- Leafs, vines, nature inspired textures
- Diamond cut
Organic, molten, melted – These terms relate to heavily textured finishes often created by taking precious metal to just below it’s melting point, so the metal starts to breakdown giving a stunning organic look to an engagement ring.
Planished, hammered, beaten – These descriptions relate to the metal of an engagement ring being repeatedly struck with a tool like a hammer. This technique gives an even pitted finish which can vary depending on the size of the hammerhead used & the amount of force used.
Engraved, laser engraved – Although engraving in jewellery terms often relates to an inscribed message inside a ring it can also be used to create an abstract textured finish too.
Bark, wood effect – A wood effect can be created by either texturing a wax master or the metal itself. Another technique is using ‘Mokume Gane’ a Japanese process of folding layers of precious metal.
Leafs, vines, nature inspired textures – These effects can be crafted by carving wax models & then casting from precious metals or by sculpting the designs in CAD software & 3D printing the wax masters to cast from.
Diamond cut – Diamond cutting is where the precious metal of a ring is cut by machine creating tiny facets on the metal’s surface. These facets catch the light & sparkle as though set with Diamonds.
