How do I go about designing a bespoke piece of jewellery?

I hear from many of my customers that the thought of designing a piece of bespoke jewellery can be quite daunting. "There's so many choices", "How do I go about it?", "What if I don't like the finished article", These are just a few of phrases I hear regularly. The answer to all of these is simple – don't panic! Make your choices one at a time & remember ruling out what you don't like is just as important. You may not know immediately if you prefer platinum or palladium, but you might know that you are not keen on rose gold. These decisions about what you don't like will give the designer clues to what you do like.

RING jewellers

You will inevitably be shown lots of pieces of jewellery when you are shopping but remember you must love the piece not 'quite like it'. If you don't love it – design it! Take a diamond engagement ring for example… You might see one & say "I like the narrow band but the stone is too big" then another, "The band & stone are the right size but I like princess cuts, not round brilliant cuts". Instead of compromising you should take the elements you do like from the rings & design your own creation.

Don't worry about going into a jewellers without having a clear final idea. I find the vast majority of customers that come into RING jewellers have no idea what they want often because they have only just started looking. Interestingly, the tiny percentage of clients that do have a more finalised idea tend to be people that are very practically minded & design for a living like architects, engineers & product designers. As I mentioned though these people are the minority so don't be afraid to ask lots of questions!

I have missed the answer to one important question though "What if I don't like the finished article". Well, to answer this I can only speak for myself & my shop policy at RING jewellers. Our guarantee is that if there is anything you don't like about the finished article we will make all changes free of charge. This could be from a simple change in the finger size right up to a total remake – you pay nothing. This means you will never be stuck with a ring (or any other piece of jewellery) that you don't love!
