How do I find out my partner’s ring size without them knowing?

This is a question many people ask when engagement ring shopping. In short there is no simple solution for this problem. But here is a list of do’s & do not’s that will help you narrow down your partner’s finger size.

DO

• Borrow a ring from their jewellery box but be sure to establish the following:

Which finger do they wear it on? If it’s not the ring finger it will not be much help.

Which hand do they wear it on? With most people their dominant hand is bigger.

Is the ring a perfect fit? It should go on easily but be a wiggle off at the knuckle.

• If you can trust them to keep a secret, ask a friend of your partner’s if they can help by letting them try on one of their rings or a ring in a jewellery store.
• Ask the jeweller for their advice on popular sizes for your partner’s physique.

DO NOT

• Draw around a ring. Unfortunately, this is very inaccurate.
• Borrow a ring of your partner’s without knowing if it fits perfectly or which finger your partner wears it on.
• Try a ring of your partner’s on yourself as a guide if you do not know if it fits their ring finger.

Also, do bear in mind that a well-made engagement ring & a jewellery store with a skilled goldmsith can resize most engagement rings up or down by quite a few sizes very easily. The tips above are more to get you into the right ballpark when it comes to finding out your partner’s ring size without them knowing.
