A guide to choosing the perfect ladies wedding ring

When it comes to choosing a ladies wedding ring, there are many things to consider. But one of the most important factors is finding a ring that compliments your engagement ring while at the same time being a beautiful stand alone ring in its own right for times when you are not wearing both rings together.

There are so many different types of rings available on the market these days, from simple, plain bands to intricate designs with diamonds and gemstones. Which will you choose? Well this guide will help guide you through your options.

Firstly, what does your engagement ring look like? If it is a solitaire diamond ring with a simple, plain shank then you are spoiled for choice! The simplicity means that a plain band matches well, while a Diamond set wedding ring creates a nice contrast. In this instance the key is width! Assuming your engagement ring is not particularly chunky then look for a wedding ring between 2mm-3mm. These sorts of widths will not distract from your engagement ring whether plain or Diamond set.

If your engagement ring has smaller diamonds around the band, then you have two options. You might want to consider a plain wedding band for a contrast to keep the engagement the star of the show. This is a great option for people who don’t like their jewellery too ‘blingy’. If you do want a bit more sparkle the key is the style of Diamond setting. There are lots of different ways to set Diamonds. If you choose a different style to the way the small stones are set in your engagement ring then you could end up with a bit of a clash. Copying the setting style has the opposite effect & makes the rings look like a stunning set that was made at the same time. Bands with gemstones, these can look beautiful either together or on their own.

When it comes to precious metal types it is best to match the metal in the wedding ring to that of your engagement ring. If you have a white gold or Platinum engagement ring then you should go for a white gold or Platinum wedding band. Yellow gold rings look great with yellow gold bands, and Rose gold looks lovely with Rose gold bands. However, with gold you can mix the colour but not the carat of different golds! Mixing colours of gold can make a stunning contrast but different carats have different strengths so mixing these is a big no, no because one ring will damage the other.

So what about your budget? One factor that many couples overlook is that the metal weight can affect the price even more than Diamonds! If you are looking for a gents ring(s) for example you could have the same ring made for between £200 & £2000 purely on the choice of metals. Titanium for example is both durable & low cost whereas a well made, very wide Platinum or 18ct gold ring can cost quite a bit. With ladies Diamond rings on the other hand the carat weight is rarely huge. Also, you get a lot more for your money when you buy say 0.50ct of tiny stones compared to a 0.50ct solitaire. These two factors considered mean that a ladies ring covered in Diamonds can be cheaper than a plain gents platinum band so think about your partner’s choice as well as your own when budgeting.

A very important thing when choosing a ladies wedding ring is ensuring it fits perfectly alongside your engagement ring. If your Diamond setting sticks out wider than the shank of your ring or if you have an unusual cut like a marquise, oval or pear you should consider getting a wedding ring made to fit your engagement ring. It will look fabulous and more importantly it will stay in place on your finger. Ladies often complain that their engagement rings move around a lot on their finger. A fitted wedding ring can prevent this spinning which, in turn, prevents damage to your engagement ring’s delicate setting.

Engraving a wedding ring can be a really special way to personalise your ring. You can have your wedding date, names or a short phrase engraved on the inside of your ring. This is a wonderful way to commemorate your wedding day. As well as this traditional way of engraving a ladies wedding ring don’t forget engraving can be a great way of creating detail on the outside too. If Diamonds are a bit too sparkly for you, or if they push prices out of your budget you could consider engraving as an external decorative feature. This could be a ‘milgrain’ which is a row of tiny beads that add beautiful detail to a wedding ring. You might also want something that is very personal like a hand-written message from your partner. With advances in laser engraving a hand-written message can be scanned & engraved on such a tiny scale that to anyone else it just looks like an intricate pattern. To you & your partner though, there is a special, personal meaning.
