The modern day proposal

The Leap Day, which falls on the 29th February every four years, has long been known as a day of folklore and superstition. It has also become a modern declaration of love.

According to an old Irish legend, St Brigid complained to St Patrick that women had to wait far too long for men to propose to them. St Patrick struck a deal with St Brigid and declared that women could propose on this one day in February during the leap year.

2000 years later this tradition still stands strong as many women take the chance to pop the question to their partners every four years, balancing the genders as it balances the calendar.

A new tradition in recent times has been to give your soon-to-be-husband an engagement ring. One way of making an engagement ring that extra bit special is by remodelling old family jewellery, which gives both partners and opportunity to transforms that piece of jewellery that may not have been worn, but also holds great sentimental value. Cool alternatives include a pendant or a personalised bangle.

We meet with many customers who are looking for that extra special item to give to their future spouse. Over the years we have created several original bespoke items that that has gone above and beyond the traditional engagement ring.

One customer who wanted to propose with a special item was Rebecca Loveday. She wanted to propose to her boyfriend for the leap year and commissioned a personalised bangle.  The piece included laser engravings of her fingerprints on the ends of the bangle, with a series of special symbols around the outside – each one very special to the couple.

Rebecca Loveday explains, “The gate was the place that we both confessed the feelings we'd harboured for each other for years. The duomo is somewhere Joe dreamt we would go together, before the conversation at the gate, and where we will go one day.

“The stars relate to how Joe described my “brightness” and also a line from an Ed Sheeran song that is special to us. St. Cuthbert's cross relates to Joe's philosophy and faith and a safe and secure time we spent in Durham. The notes are from Bach's B Minor Mass that we heard the best choir in the world perform on the night I proposed to Joe. And the bridge is a famous one in Lucerne, Switzerland, where I proposed to Joe.”

Inside was the special message and big question: “My magnificent Joe, will you marry me?”

Joe was blown away with the personalised pieces and of course said yes!
