The world’s most iconic engagement rings

Whether you’re shopping for that perfect engagement ring or just love to admire a bit of sparkle, celebrities provide us with some great inspiration for a romantic proposal.

With wedding season nearly upon us, we take a look back over the most iconic, fabulous and memorable engagement rings that have inspired us at RING Jewellers.

Elizabeth Taylor

When you think diamonds and iconic jewellery, nobody did it better than Elizabeth Taylor. Married eight times, Elizabeth, a self-confessed jewellery fanatic only wore the best jewels.

After meeting on the set of Cleopatra, Richard Burton proposed to her with a diamond and platinum ring featuring a jaw-dropping 33.19 carat centre stone, and two tapered baguette cut diamonds. The enormous diamond was later renamed ‘The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond’, and firmly set her place in the hall of diamond fame!

Jacqueline Kennedy née Bouvier

A style icon of the White House, Jacqueline Bouvier’s elegance was admired across the world. When John F. Kennedy proposed in 1953 he chose a vintage art deco styled yellow gold ring, which featured both a 2.88 carat weight diamond as well as a 2.84 carat weight emerald. The beautiful ring, created by Van Cleef & Arpel included several tapered baguettes that gave the ring a distinct flowery design.

Blake Lively

When Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ announced they had wed in secret in 2012, pictures emerged of Blake’s stunning engagement ring which reportedly cost a cool $2million. The rare, light pink 12 carat diamond was designed by Ryan and jeweller to the stars, Lorraine Schwartz, who helped create the custom setting in rose gold and pave diamonds.

Queen Elizabeth

Married since 1946 in Westminster Abbey, Prince Philip commissioned Philip Antrobus to design and manufacture a platinum and diamond engagement ring using diamonds taken from a tiara worn by his mother, Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark.

The ring features a three carat diamond in the centre, set in an eight claw coronet setting and four cut diamonds on each shoulder.

Kate Middleton

No ring in modern British history holds as much sentimental value as the ring Prince William used to propose to Kate Middleton in 2010. The precious heirloom once belonged to his late mother Princess Diana.

The 18 carat white gold ring featured a 12 carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire stone surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, handpicked by Diana herself.

When they announced their engagement, Prince William said the ring was his way of making sure his mother ‘didn’t miss out’.
